Muslim integration
Sarfraz Manzoor writes a thought-provoking article, arguing that integration between Muslims and “white society” is a two-way process. While I agree with this, I disagree with his argument that the close-knit Muslim community is something we should strive to emulate. If being a close-knit society means that it’s more difficult for gay people to come out, if every decision is to be made in the context of “the community”, or if freedom of speech is more limited because of what close-knit others think… then why would I want white society to change for the sake of a little more “respect”?
The article in The Guardian can be found here. I may disagree with some points it raises, but it’s definitely worth a read.
