China rights
“Human rights conditions in China deteriorated last year even as China sought to portray itself as an increasingly open, modern society ahead of the 2008 Olympics, Human Rights Watch said in a report on Friday … Beijing promised in its bid for the Games that it would work to improve its human rights record. It also vowed to open its doors wider, allowing a freer flow of information into and out of the country.”

More promises to be broken by China, is anyone surprised? As far as reading the New York Slimes article, I will pass because they have lost all credibility in my estimation.

Nope, not remotely surprised. I don’t think it’s a suitable country to hold the Olympics at all with its current human rights record - then again, if I went with that logic there’s very few places it could be held…

The problem is Chinese people do not have the freedom of speech. Fortunately things are changing slow slowly, for a greener community, a more inclusive community; but Chariman Mao once said: Waiting for tens of thossand years is too far away!

Yeah, things are changing. I don’t think it’s just that the Chinese people don’t have freedom of speech - though, obviously that’s a big part of it! It’s also that the international community wants to keep China on their side, so they’ll trade with them and stuff like that, and don’t want to mention human rights for fear of jeapordising it.
