Gay businesses
“A hotelier who runs a gay-only guest house has said the government’s anti-discrimination bill would be a step backward for gay rights.”
In a bizarre opposite to the new anti-discrimination legislation, this man wants the right to discriminate against heterosexuals. I fully support the new law, and if it means that businesses - gay or straight - can’t discriminate at all then I think it’s a good thing. To want to allow any discrimination is ridiculous. As with the religious exemption - no discrimination, no exceptions, and that includes gay businesses. The BBC News article is here.

I completely agree with you. When I was running the LGB soc @ Bath, we were sent to the NUS LGB Conference with a motion to allow non-LGB students to go as representatives. It seemed so stupid to me that we were fighting against discrimination, but even at our own conference we were discriminating against heterosexuals.
I think what guys like the B&B owner don’t realise is that all the doomsday scenarios can be addressed in other ways. For instance, he could be worried that Christian fundamentalists would book out rooms in his hotel and make it uncomfortable for all the other guests - the reality is that if someone is disruptive, regardless of their sexuality, you can kick them out. If he continues to market his B&B as “gay” without explicitly banning heterosexuals, I imagine not much will change!

Exactly. It’s the same with gay clubs - they can continue to advertise as being gay clubs, and the new law doesn’t mean that they can’t refuse entry to heterosexuals who they think may be homophobic/cause problems.
