Music sales decline
As CD sales decrease, they aren’t being matched by the increase in legal digital music sales. Ars Technica comments that this deficit may not be due to illegal file sharing, but instead may simply be because people aren’t buying music they don’t like. I agree. Having a few good tracks interspersed with filler worked with CD albums, where listeners had to purchase all or nothing, but digital music allows users to pick and choose which tracks they want. The solution is for labels to make sure that albums are filled with good music, rather than consisting of a few hits along with lots of average content.
