Participation vs presence

“The big ‘P’ word in technology these days is ‘participatory.’ But I’m increasingly convinced that a more important ‘P’ word is ‘presence.’ “

Meri Williams’ weblog flagged up this key phrase. In today’s fast-paced world, Twitter allows users to keep each other up-to-date interactively, but passively. It’s that always-on “presence” which allows you to follow and update friends when it’s convenient for you, rather than having to “participate” at a mutually-chosen time. A fascinating article.
