Rushdie protests

Protests are sweeping the Muslim world after it was announced that Salman Rushdie, author of The Satanic Verses, is to receive a knighthood. Pakistan’s religious affairs minister went as far as to suggest that a suicide bombing against him would be justified. I understand that the book is offensive to Muslims, but it’s ridiculous that there is this reaction every time something offensive to Islam is communicated or recognised. It’s an issue of free speech, and it’s no wonder that countries that don’t allow their citizens religious and political freedom don’t understand this.
