Voting “correctly”
Marcel Berlins argues that no British referendum should be held on the EU semi-constitution because the vote would be less about the treaty and more about British membership of the EU. I agree that no referendum is required, not because (as Berlins suggests) people would vote on the “wrong” thing but rather because we need to be sparing with our referendums. His argument that people would not vote on the “right” issue suggests that he believes the public should only be given the chance to vote in a referendum if politicians think they will vote “correctly”. And in this case, would a referendum not simply become a political tool for puppet voting? Guardian G2 article here.
