It sounds like the Portuguese police have been totally inept with their investigation. Having searched Robert Murat’s apartment three times, they have now found blood in the McCanns’ apartment. They should have been thorough enough the first time that no further searches were needed and no evidence - especially something like blood - was missed. BBC article here.
