New grid, fewer jobs
Despite not blogging for months, I read this article in January and kept a note of it. While the expansion of the National Grid resulted in increased wealth and prosperity for many individuals, the expansion of the Internet has resulted in job losses and increasing concentration of wealth. Whereas businesses which expanded with electricity required more people as they grew, modern business can scale rapidly with fewer human resources, and in many cases replace those they already employ. While not an entirely new idea, it’s a well-written contrast of two revolutionary technologies.
