ISP-RM?
Jude Umeh outlines an interesting idea on his BCS blog on DRM. He notes the recent Memorandum of Understanding between the UK recording industry and six major ISPs, which essentially means that ISPs will monitor their networks for illegal filesharing in return for the music industry relaxing its previously zero-tolerance, anti-consumer position. Umeh notes that, on the face of it, this would seem to be a win-win for all parties involved. However, there’s still no getting away from the fact that this move to “ISP-RM”, as he terms it, involves ISPs monitoring their users’ activity. Whatever the benefits, if it involves virtual snooping, the ends don’t always justify the means.
