Apple PR != Apple news
Molly Wood writes an insightful piece on her blog criticising reporters who propagate rumours and publish company-generated PR as news. This follows a weekend Wall Street Journal article about Apple, which lacked sources but was nonetheless rapidly reposted as indisputable fact across the web. Wood brings her experience as a technology reporter to bear, noting Apple’s famous reluctance to allow anyone to give them bad press and the incessant push of its PR team, postulating that this ‘factual’ story was more than likely borne out of Apple spin’s machine. The result? An increase in Apple’s share price on the one hand, and journalists who just slipped one more notch on the respectability scale on the other.
