Jude Umeh outlines an interesting idea on his BCS blog on DRM. He notes the recent Memorandum of Understanding between the UK recording industry and six major ISPs, which essentially means that ISPs will monitor their networks for illegal filesharing in return for the music industry relaxing its previously zero-tolerance, anti-consumer position. Umeh notes that, on the face of it, this would seem to be a win-win for all parties involved. However, there’s still no getting away from the fact that this move to “ISP-RM”, as he terms it, involves ISPs monitoring their users’ activity. Whatever the benefits, if it involves virtual snooping, the ends don’t always justify the means.

In a recent article on the BBC website, Bill Thompson rails against Apple’s closed approach to security. He notes, quite rightly, that Microsoft has in recent years made great strides in their approach to security, including open discussion about the purpose of updates and fixes, allowing administrators to choose what to install. Apple, on the other hand, has a very closed approach, which leaves users in the dark as to the purpose of the updates they install. While I do agree that openness is preferable and a far better model, Thompson does miss one very key point - the reason Microsoft have been forced to become so open about security is that they’re so bad at it in the first place, and need to convince users that they know what they’re doing.

Laura Barton takes an in-depth look at the importance of understanding the lyrics to songs. Bemoaning the decline of printed lyric booklets in CD cases and the rise of standalone MP3 downloads, she argues that whether or not we get the words wrong, and whether or not we like the music, the intended meaning behind the lyrics (and more importantly what it means to us) is something which we shouldn’t lose. I completely concur. The emotional and poetic connection we make with a song and its meaning is something that would, to our detriment, be lost if the decline of the printed lyric continues.

Don Reisinger quite rightly asks why Apple is allowing developers to sell useless iPhone applications on the App Store for ridiculous prices, citing one priced at almost $1000. As he says, allowing developers the independence to set prices without interference is, in general, a very good thing. However, when it stops being simple commercial ambition and instead becomes “app spam” and blatant profiteering with the intention of suckering users, they should step in and stop it - even if just by putting a sensible cap on prices.

“As I’ve argued in the past, Yahoo needs to out-open Google if it is going to have any chance at competing in search. Even if it’s too late to catch up to Google in core search, an open approach could help Yahoo differentiate its product, win over developers, and open up new avenues of search that Google is currently ignoring. And being open means embracing Google as well.”

This is a really interesting idea from Erick Schonfeld. Given Google’s dominance, he’s right that a change of tack is needed to come anywhere near making inroads in search - and it’s becoming increasingly clear that on the Web, the more open a technology and its APIs, the more widely adopted it becomes.

The idea of using a combination of P2P technology and idle processing power is nothing new when it comes to networks of PCs. However, European and Australian researchers have come up with the innovative idea of using television set-top boxes as nodes instead. More numerous in many homes than computers and always-on, the concept which could potentially increase network sizes drastically. The resulting P2P cloud could, the article reports, be used for anything from creating a vast Flickr-like service to providing decentralised networks of on-demand content. Can’t imagine the music and movie industries are too happy about that idea…

However, the government report doesn’t go far enough in condemning the plan. Despite their conclusions, it’s a retrospective tax which penalises drivers who have previously bought more polluting cars, rather than aiming to change future behaviour. The increase will hit the poorest hardest, as they are less able to replace their cars with more fuel efficient models. And enticing people to scrap their current cars in favour of more efficient models is not an environmentally friendly way to proceed anyway, as the environmental impact of scrapping a car and building a completely new one is surely far worse than using an existing, more polluting car until the end of its natural life. The plans are ill thought-out and smack of the desperation of a government wanting to demonstrate any kind of direction as it flounders.

The BBC reports on a Microsoft study, which asks whether the “six degrees of separation” theory holds true on their Messenger IM network. It’s an interesting idea, but I’m unconvinced - it seems more like marketing than good science. The study was limited only to their users, and geographic, social and economic factors must play a large yet unquantifiable part in building connections in this artificial environment.

Gmail has finally updated its contacts manager so that users can stop it from automatically adding every address they e-mail to their contacts list. I actually really like the way they’ve done it, by adding recently and most frequently e-mailed lists, addresses from which can then be easily transferred to contacts. It’s a long-overdue fix to the annoying behaviour of a supposedly “helpful feature”. For more info, see the Gmail Blog, here.

Anyway, now that my contacts aren’t going to end up overloaded with randoms, and in the interests of integration between e-mail and IM, I’m going to start using my Gmail address (guy.rintoul@gmail.com) for Google Talk, although I’ll still use im@guyrintoul.com for MSN. Please update your GTalk contact lists as required. My full contact details can be found here.

“Some start-ups choose to develop their products and services in stealth mode in order to avoid competitor attention and build hype leading up to the launch … [But] Building an entire product below the radar, then banking on a one-time launch is a risky proposition … I think that a more open approach, that may involve some level of secrecy, is the way to go.”

I completely agree. Building up anticipation through controlled information release will excite people and prompt them to sign up for the final release. If potential users are kept completely in the dark about what to expect, they’ll often just find another solution to use in the meantime - and once locked in, they’ll stick with it even if it’s inferior. Post is on Mapping The Web, here.

I’ve just been playing about with the new Facebook profiles layout, and my overriding opinion is that it’s ugly and badly designed. I get that the idea was to group things into logical areas and get rid of profile clutter, but I find it to be even less intuitive with tabs and filters everywhere, and the merged wall/minifeed thing is a bad plan. I can see a massive backlash from the Facebook community on this one, and for good reason. The only good thing is the new Info tab, which combines your networks, work experience, groups etc. into one logical page. Apart from that - it’s a massive disappointment

To view your profile page in the new layout, you’ll need to install the Developer app then visit www.new.facebook.com.

Yet another hostile bid triggers yet another rejection by Yahoo’s battered board. This time, they were forced to reject an offer which would have seen Microsoft take their search division while investor Carl Icahn took the rest of the company. Ars notes that this may just be part of a larger strategy by the hostile bidders, but it will be interesting to see how Yahoo fares at its annual meeting on August 1. And going forward, Microsoft have made clear their intention to renegotiate if a new board is put in place - not an unlikely scenario given how much the current board have screwed up. Neither the current board, nor the company as a whole, are out of the woods yet.

Time has a bizarre insight into the Japanese trend for ‘elder porn’.

Jeffrey Denning blogs for the Washington Times about the latest invention of Lamperd Less Lethal, Inc. The “safety bracelet”, as they’re marketing it, is designed to be compulsory for airline passengers, and would take the place of a boarding pass, contain personal details, and monitor the whereabouts of the passenger and luggage. Oh, and a minor detail - it would also administer electric shocks at the whim of cabin crew through its inbuilt taser. If the idea of a company wanting to force passengers to wear an electrocution bracelet isn’t bad enough, what’s scarier is that the US government has asked for a written proposal regarding this disgusting, inhumane idea.

Ian Leader writes an interesting blog post on ‘Open Source, Email threading and Gmail Labs’. As he notes, closed-source, ad-supported software may be regarded as a fair trade-off in comparison to open source:

“This is probably a reasonable trade off: after all, users don’t just get free software (zero marginal cost) but free hosting, bandwidth and storage as well (real costs to the service provider). However it can be very limiting.” [emphasis his]

However, he cites the example of Google’s slow progress in fixing a minor problem as the flip-side. While it would be a five-minute fix in open source, it becomes a drawn-out hassle to resolve when the code is proprietary and protected. However much we try to balance all the factors, both open- and closed-source models have their up- and downsides in one form or another.

“[Verizon CEO] Seidenberg’s main contention seems to be that the iPhone isn’t a success because it has such a small share of the overall mobile phone market, which is sort of like arguing that GM is more successful than Ferrari because they sell more cars.”
Love the comparison From News.com, here.

I meant to blog this last week but didn’t get round to it. ICANN, the body which oversees the addressing structure of the Internet, voted on Friday to open up Top Level Domains (TLDs) to allow companies or individuals to have any suffix they like. So, for example, News.com reports that instead of being limited to .com or .co.uk, eBay could have its own .eBay TLD. This is a bad, bad decision on so many levels; it will cause a ‘gold rush’ on domains, confuse users, result in convoluted non-standard URLs, remove the existing sensible structure from domain naming, and is potentially an open invite for fraudsters wanting to mimic or hack URLs. Just about the only positive thing is the decision to allow non-Latin domains, which means that (unlike currently) domains could be registered in character sets such as Chinese or Cyrillic.

CNET News.com reports on this stupid mistake here.
